Just finished Ken Burns’ new 18h long Vietnam war documentary. If you, like me, have felt burnt by countless hours of sleep inducing drivel about the National Park System et cetera, please, give Ken a new chance. The Vietnam War is an incredible piece of work. For many years I used to read Herr’s Dispatches every year and Tim O’Brien’s The Things They Carried was always on my bedside table. Hearing O’Brien himself read from The Things moved me to tears at the end of the documentary. Difficult to see the corrupt US leadership—Johnson, Nixon et al—lying about the war and not to think about the current Trump administration’s view on ethics and government. 58 000 dead young Americans and many many more Vietnamese.
